Nothing will show your passion, devotion and love more than a bouquet of long-stemmed roses. These elegant flowers have come to hold a special place in the hearts – and gardens – of many rose connoisseurs. They come in 4 different varieties, with a wide range of smells, colors and shapes. Long-stemmed roses typically have stems that are at least 4 feet long, while on the vine, and usually have flowers at least 5 inches in diameter.
One of the most common varieties of long-stemmed roses is the floribunda. This rose is a cross between a hybrid tea rose and a polyantha rose. It has stems that reach 4 to 5 feet in length, while growing several bunches of flowers on each stem. Colors include red, pink, salmon, purple, violet, mauve, pale orange, yellow, white and mottled. These roses are great for home gardeners, due to their high resistance to disease and excellent display characteristics. A dozen of these roses typically sell for $20 to $40.
Hybrid tea roses were first created in 1867, by crossing a tea rose with a hybrid perpetual rose. The stems on this type reach 5 to 6 feet and are highly rigid. They only grow one flower per stem, that gives off a light but incredibly fragrant aroma. The colors on this variety come in red, yellow, white, fuchsia, orange, peach, baby blue and mottled. Some of these types have little or no scent, while others have tantalizingly fruity scents, like apricot and apples. A dozen of these will typically cost between $30 and $60.
Grandiflora are another popular type of long-stemmed roses. This variety first came into existence in 1954, when a floribunda was crossed with a hybrid tea rose. The stems are typically between 4 and 6 feet, with clusters of flowers on each stem, 4 inches in diameter. They are one of the most beautiful long-stemmed varieties to watch grow, with 25 to 35 petals on each rose. Unfortunately they are notorious for having little or no aroma. However, many people believe that they make up for this lack of scent with their incredibly vibrant colors. The colors found on grandiflora roses include crimson, ruby red, red wine, magenta, rich plum, mauve, gold, silver and mottled. They’re widely regarded as one of the best long-stemmed rose varieties for home cultivation. Grandiflora roses are disease-resistant and grow exceptionally vigorously. A dozen of these roses will usually cost anywhere from $30 to $70.
The romantica rose is a cross of an English-style rose and a hybrid tea rose. The average stem is 4 feet long, however some can grow to an immense 12 feet! These are the long-stemmed roses which you have likely seen with gigantic flowers that come in traditional red, pink, yellow and white. These flowers are highly fragrant, able to be smelled from feet away. They are also an ideal choice for home gardeners, due to their resistance to pests and diseases, tolerance of high temperatures and ability to make exceptional display flowers. Romanticas usually cost anywhere from $15 to $35 for a dozen roses.
